Introduction

NANJING
306 km (189 miles) NW of Shanghai. First the nation's capital in the early years of the Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644), then the capital of the Republic of China from 1911 to 1937, and now capital of Jiangsu Province. Located on the south bank of the Yangtze River, Nanjing is one of the most delightful Chinese cities. It was the Capital City of six to ten dynasties what gave him a brilliant cultural heritage. At the same time it offers modern conveniences and emerging cosmopolitan lifestyle of contemporary urban China.

YANGZHOU
Located at the junction of the Yangzi River and the Grand Canal, Yangzhou was known during the Sui and Tang dynasties as the economic and cultural center of southern China, home to scholars, painters, poets, literati, and merchants. It was also the playground of the rich and famous, starting with the 6th-century Sui Yangdi emperor, who visited courtesans here. The Qing Qianlong emperor visited six times. Today Yangzhou is a charming town with broad, tree-lined boulevards and a network of canals and lakes (the famous Slender West Lake). Yangzhou is known for its handicrafts, landmarks and cuisine. (e.g. the famous Yangzhou fried rice)

Zhenjiang
Pearl S. Buck (1892–1973), Nobel Prize-winning author of The Good Earth and other novels about China, lived in Zhenjiang with her missionary parents until the age of 18. Her childhood home is preserved on the grounds of a semiconductor factory in Zhenjiang.

Jinshan Temple, built over 1,600 years ago, is very famous because of the White Snake legend. The white snake turned into a girl and married a young scholar named Xu Xian. A monk, Fa Hai, tried again and again to undermine their marriage. Out of indignation, the white snake summoned a deluge and flooded Jinshan Temple.
