Hubei Province, 500km (311 miles) NW of Wuhan

Wudang Shan (Mountain) is number one in the hierarchy of sacred Daoist mountains.
Monasteries on the summit has long been known as an academic centre for the research, teaching and practice of meditation, Chinese martial arts, traditional Chinese medicine, Taoist agriculture practices and related arts.

The monasteries and buildings were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The palaces and temples in Wudang, which was built as an organized complex during the Ming Dynasty (14th–17th centuries), contains Taoist buildings from as early as the 7th century. It represents the highest standards of Chinese art and architecture over a period of nearly 1,000 years. Noted temples include the Golden Hall, Nanyan Temple and the Purple Cloud Temple.

Unlike other Taoist Mountains like Emei Shan, Qingcheng Shan, and Nan Yue Heng Shan, Wudang receives relatively few tourists because of a longer journey and less comfortable lodging, and it has preserved its temples and its Daoist tradition more successfully than the less-remote mountains. Tthe mountain's rugged peaks covered in old-growth forest, along with its ancient monasteries -- some built to fit the contours of the cliffs, others to mirror them -- are well worth the adventure. The natural setting is so photogenic that it was chosen for background scenes for the internationally acclaimed movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".

Another name associated with these mountains is Zhang Sanfeng, the Daoist Immortal credited with inventing the discipline of taijiquan in the late 14th century. Though less well known overseas, Wudang's "internal" form of wushu (martial arts) is as highly regarded as Shaolin Temple's "external" form. Students come from all parts of China to study at the many martial arts schools in town and on the mountain. The famous swords used in the Wudang style are for sale everywhere.

Highlights

* Enjoy the extensive Wudang complex of remarkable palaces, temples, pagodas and nunneries is constructed on the slopes, cliffs and peaks of the verdant Wudang mountain scenic area.
* Learn to do taichi and "internal" martial arts on the misty peak.
* Learn taoism from the master, and attend meditation practise and chant prayers together with remotely taoists.

Best time to visit

Wudang is a good summer retreat as the monasteries and mountain summit are covered with snow more than half of the year. Staying in the hotel on the top is still cold in May. The best times to visit are April through June and September through October, when the leaves turn as red as the gorgeous temple walls.
