Students completing this course will be able to use the basics of Chinese herbal medicine to understand illness and apply these concepts by using commonly available "patent medicines." Students will also be able to use some of the most popular single herbs from Chinese herbal medicine in their daily lives.
Duration: 8 Week Course 16 hours (the course can be tailor-made for fit into your schedule).

1. Basic Chinese Medical Theory
Yin/Yang, 8 principles, 6 Excesses (pathogens)
2. The Functional Organ Systems of Chinese Medicine
The heart, lung, liver, spleen, kidney, sm. intestine, lg. intestine, gallbladder, stomach, and urinary bladder (plus 2 others) of Chinese medicine is a group of 5 pairs of organs. We will cover each organ and its primary functions and common pathologies.
3. Basics of Diagnosis
Seeing the patterns of symptoms to help understand the best medicine to apply is the key to Chinese herbal medicine. Tongue and pulse diagnosis will be covered as well as using the information from the first two classes to help us see the patterns.
-Understanding Herbs from the Chinese Perspective
We will cover the energetics of Chinese herbs using examples of individual herbs.
4. Patent Medicines for the lung
Cough, congestion (including nasal congestion), infections, fevers, etc.
5. Patent Medicines for the digestion.
Food poisoning, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, pain, etc.
6. Patent Medicines for aches and pains.
Headache, joint pains, low-back pain, etc.
7. Patent Medicines for sleep, stress, and energy.
Insomnia, tiredness, low energy, anxiety, etc.
8. Patent medicines for women and children.
Menstrual problems, menopause, post-partum, several patents specific for children
About the teacher:
Thomas Avery Garran has been studying herbal medicine since 1989. His original training was in Western herbalism and later in Chinese medicine. He is a graduate of the American School of Herbalism and holds a Masters Degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Thomas is the former Chair of the Department of Herbal Medicine at the Institute of Clinical Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Honolulu, HI, and on the advisory board for the John Burns School of Medicine’s Department of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine, University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Thomas has been living in Beijing, China for the last 4 years where he has been practicing and worked with several teachers. Thomas has primarily focused on internal medicine including the treatment of gynecology, as well as digestive, liver, and lung illnesses.
Thomas' philosophy of healing is based on compassionate empathy, conscious awareness, and that each person is unique; requiring their program to health to be uniquely designed. Thomas believes that diet and lifestyle are major factors in building and maintaining health, and that these combined with Chinese medicine are powerful tools for healing

This Class/Tour can be scheduled for your group at any time you like but require a minimum of 4 adult guests (or the financial equivalent thereof) .
The price includes Tuina practitioner expert, interpreter, venue and all materials.
in total there will be 8 hours of class, and you may schedule them as it fits your schedule according to the availability of the teachers.
1. We must check the date:
The CCC’s masters, artists, and teachers are all experts in their field and unique in their circles. Their schedules are tight, so they may not be available at the time frame you would like to book. We will have to check with them first before we can confirm the time with you.
2. Prepayment is necessary:
Once the artists/experts are confirmed, prepayment is required so we can book his/her time.
3. Corporate Clients
All prices listed are for private individuals. Corporate clients will be separately quoted.
- The class/workshop will be conducted in English/with English interpretation at the China Culture Center unless a different location is requested.
- There will be an extra charge for offsite venues, because extra time will be needed to transport the materials and prepare the venue for most classes/workshops (except taichi or talks).
- The CCC’s center can accommodate maximum 10-20 people for a class/workshop.
- Special venues of different size and ambiance can be arranged for corporate clients.with extra charges.
