Mr. Li, professor of China Academy of Social Science will share with us the concept of Tian (죩in Chinese Philosophy. Does it mean heaven, god, sky or 'the principle'?

In Chinese philosophy the term "Tian" covers a wide spectrum of views. They range from the religious idea of the supreme God, the natural sky to the utmost principle. "Tian" is often felt, rather than understood; nevertheless, "Tian" constitutes the most basic religious notion in traditional China.

As a discourse between Chinese and English languages the divergences between the meanings of the Chinese "Tian" and the various English terms are fundamental to the cultural differences. The lecture seeks to bridge the two worlds and elucidate the religious underpinning of the present day Chinese.

The lecture will be presented in English with Prof. Li in attendance for questions and answers
