The issue of Beijing's image has been a focus of numerous disputes among architects, city planners, and decision-makers for decades. The debate is surging to a new high as the city prepares to host the 29th Olympics scheduled for four years from now.

The publication of the book "An Evolutionary Record of Beijing City" Cheng Ji in Chinese) in October, 2003 has been at the top of Beijing's bestseller list ever since, and has triggered a new wave of discussion on urban planning in the capital.

The book details 50 years of destruction of the capital's unique character. Author Wang Jun, a journalist who has interviewed over 50 people in his part 10 years, believes what's happened is a travesty for China and the world.

Wang Jun will share with us his research on the past 50 years history of Beijing City and the challenge of modernisation and conservation, including stories on the arguments and controversial projects during the Cultural Revelution and China's Reform since 1980's.

The talk will be conducted with English interpretation.
