I have an old friend that I have not heard from in a long time, but one of his experiences still lingers in my mind. One time, he had come back from the shore. He enjoyed the movements of waves in the sunset. The endless waves arrived upon the shore, as if hands in hands, one after another. They made him feel the way of the movement of the whole world.
It was said according to scientific survey, every wave consists of endless ripples in different degree of vibration, direction and frequency. And endless waves cause a billow. “A wave” can be called “a complex ripples”, which remind us of the patterns of breathing. With the moving air in nostrils and the movement of the abdomen, can we feel something similar with the wave?
We may ask: “where does each ripple come from? The scientist will reply: “from the vibration of the whole universe, the wind in air and the interactive motion between endless ripples.” And this answer confirms my friend’s feeling as reality. But he had a further question: “where does each ripple of breath come from?” The Zen master may reply: “from the vibration of the mind.” And this is the more interesting point to intrigue me. We are moved by the endless ripples of consciousness, feelings, perceptions and mental formations of our own mind. It has inexhaustible energy, which is based on the illimitable depend-arising.
The lesson I learned from the wave is that we should see the world and our whole life in the view of continuous and integrated shifting moments.
A beautiful scene, isn’t it?
