When we are in sitting meditation, the method is our whole life. When the mind is ready to sit 100 years, it will be easier to sit 10 more minutes. Within this “100 years”, we care nothing but the method. The mind knows exactly how it concentrates on the object – breathing through the nostrils or the abdomen’s movement.
When you are concentrating on the state of breathing through the nostrils, the mind knows truly the air is passing by the nostrils when in and out, and it is passing by the mind at the place of the nostrils. We may say to ourselves: “I will stay with this place untildeath”. When the “passing by” was linked with “passing away”, the mind was settled down. This is the path to Samatha – calm abiding.
When we are being aware of the abdomen’s movement, the rising up and falling down and their changing sensations are just whole living in the moment of now, there’s nowhere else to find another life. At the moment that the mind penetrates into the very next split second, the vitality of life is narrating itself. When the awareness is alive with life in every moment of now, the essence of the world is being discovered. This is the way of Vippasana – insight cultivation.
When pain or emotion is attacking you, that’s the moment to recognize the “sitting with whole life”, they are not separate, but just another way to arouse your awareness. The moments of pain or emotion is expressing the “whole story” of the essence. And this understanding depends on the combination of Samatha and Vippasana.
When we stand up from the seat and move away, we are still “sitting with whole life”. The world will become more straight forward, and the life will be more lively!
