When we feel that our existence is “should be”, “must be” or even “originally to be”, our eyes and mind are blocked from the conditioned appearance. And this wrong view is caused by ignoring the dependent arising.
The preservation of life not only depends on food, water and air, but also the conditions of sun system, galaxy and even the whole universe. When we are taking the effect of these conditions to go on living, we are part of these conditions and becoming part of conditions for the very next moments.
The state of working, including the content of a job, the way of doing, the relation with colleagues, the position and salary, etc., not only depend on the attitude and effort of now, but also the experience and wills in the past of this life, and even the karma of past lives.
Desires and needs
As we normally think, the life is about living or working, living for working or working for living. For any of them, the theme is the same: “desires and needs”. Sometimes, we feel the desires are from inside, and the needs are caused by outside; sometimes, we think the desires are caused by outside, and the needs are from inside. We don't know they depend on each other – inside and outside, desires and needs. The inner desires will produce needs, the outside conditions will cause needs to arouse desires; the inner desires try to meet needs, but it depends on the outside conditions.
When we say: “it depends.” It implies “might be” or “might not”. But for Zen, it has deeper meaning – “its existence depends on other conditions”! The “life” of a body or sociality does not depend on itself, the state of work doesn’t depend on oneself, the desire or need does not depend on itself. Any “other conditions” doesn't depend on itself in any moment!
If we can remember “the conditions”, we will have better understanding on life. If we can have insight into “the conditions”, we will have more comprehension for the world.
