When we talk about suffering, our mind becomes cloudy and the breathing becomes heavier. We prefer to talk about joy or happiness, but we have to stay with all kinds of sufferings more or less. Our life is busy from stopping or escaping from suffering, we call it “living for happiness”, in other words, we may say “sweet coat the suffering”!
If we can understand what our happiness means, we will have better understanding about suffering. Normally, happiness will link with words like “comfortable, satisfied or contented”. They look natural, but are they too strict at the same time? It is so hard in our life to fulfill any of them, not to mention all of them. And when we recognize that comfortable is from uncomfortable, satisfied is from dissatisfied, contented is from not contented, we can understand they are just different shades of the same block in varied angles and directions. And this block is “inherent self”, its shades are “self-centered” and “self love”, which cover everything we think and do!
If we realize that the so-called happiness is part of suffering, we will change our view of “living for happiness” into “living for ceasing suffering”. Then, the spearhead will point to “self-centered”, and the umbrella of care will cover on “equal love to others”. And all of these are based on the insight on suffering and causes of suffering, that put other people in the place of yourself, treat others as you would like to be treated.
When you take the sweet coated pill, don't ignore the bitter inside : )
