“Independence” is regarded as a key word in our life, and our world is built on it. Everybody has an independent view, and wants to set up an individual independent world. It is normal because that’s how we see this world and ourselves. When we pick up a cup, we regard it as an independent container; when we look at a house, we consider it as an independent building; when we hold a pen, it is regarded as an independent tool. That is the view which encourages us to separate the rain from the cloud, isolate a leaf from a tree, and split your garden from the earth…
But we never regard the nose or ear as an independent part from the body, and the body as a whole is also not an independent one. And when we look up pen in the dictionary, it is described as “a narrow metal or plastic object which contains ink and is used to write or draw with”. There’s no such an independent tree without depending upon the leaves, branches, trunk, root or even the soil with it! From the very beginning, the world is dependent complex, no matter how tiny it is like an atom or how large it is as a galaxy! We can’t just roughly say “your life is my life, your work is my work”, but they are really dependent to each other.
The realm of emptiness
Some of us may say that when I feel lonely, stressed or drop into any other difficulties, we understand that the loneliness or difficulty is a dependent state, but it seems not meaningful to release from the problems. That’s because we freeze or tend to freeze the “dependent state”! But the quality of “dependent state” is “no freezing”. It never has its own frozen moment – inherent existence, otherwise it becomes the frozen independence. We are always tricked by “dependent state” sealed with independence. “No freezing” means “no-lock”, when you think you are locked by the loneliness or other difficulties, you should unlock with “no-lock” – you never have been, being or will be locked. That’s called emptiness!
Which realm are you in? It depends…
