Zen Thoughts 82 - Two fundamental powers

Everybody is longing for eternal peace and happiness, some of us are seeking the source of eternal peace and happiness, few of us can recognize the real source, and seldom is able to reach it. We are always kept out from it by the temporary joy, which will draw forth suffering sooner or later, and struggle vainly all the way in the snare. For we are blinded by the block of affliction and isolation.

Our life is supported by all kinds of mental and physical energies, but most of them are supporting the affliction and isolation at the same time! If you just want to get rid of these energies, there will be almost nothing left for life. There’s a Chinese saying: “Yin Shui Si Yuan – we should think of the source when we are drinking water.” Its meaning has two aspects: 1. to have water to drink depends on all kinds of conditions. 2. The quality of the water depends on its source. Any mental and physical energies in our life is not dependent on itself, the quality of them is based on the mindfulness of any moment. Just like the polluted water can be purified by a filter, the negative energies can be transformed by two fundamental powers - The Emptiness (dependent arising and no inherent nature) will dissolve the affliction, the Compassion can melt the isolation.

When whatever affliction is emerging, rather than just accept it or even embrace it, we should stare at its “face” as soon as possible and ask: ”where do you come from?” This question will be at least a strike to the deceptive attachment at that moment. When that affliction fades away, we should look at its “back” in far and ask: ”where are you going?” For both of these two questions, its only response might be: “I don’t know.” But please believe in its answer, it has no idea indeed! Because it is just an interdependent moment. We can say that any affliction has a body of “dependent arising” and dress up with “impermanence”. When you feel you cannot really catch or attach to anything, you will wake up from the deception of affliction.

The compassion is powerful but only when you can really have it in mind. If you have enough compassion to yourself, you’ll be careful to avoid taking the poison of greed and hatred. If you have enough compassion for others, you’ll be careful to avoid giving the poison of greed and hatred to anyone else. The vital issue for either of them is to learn to reduce the “clinging to self-love and self-loved”, it is the way to move away the blocked view. To be sincere to yourself: “the more love is staying with myself, the more harmful both for myself and others.” The more “clinging to self-love and self-loved” you give up, the broader understanding you will own.

The Emptiness is not to get rid of phenomena, but to clean up the “illusive inherent self”. The Compassion is not only to take care of your beloved person or thing, but to reject self-centered isolation. They are the fundamental powers for building up the life of eternal peace and happiness.
