The director is always regarded as the soul of a movie, he tells actors how to feel, how to express themselves and how to act. But a director’s soul is based on a screenwriter’s play, and he can never say that one movie is exactly what he wants to express, because the actors, props, weather, time and space are all in uncertainty. The actors, props and weather all have their uncertainties. Each role in making a movie has its function, but none of them is creator. The same is true of our life, neither mind nor body is the creator of life, they are just part of the causes and conditions to manifest the life.
When the story is made into a film and projected onto a screen, we are sitting inside the theater, watching the screen, sometime we feel sorry, sometime we feel happy, sometime we become very angry or upset. Suddenly, the projector is out of power and the lights are turned on, but it is so “real “ that we still can’t recover our emotion from the plot. At that time, we should remind ourselves there’s even no actors！
Emotions and the suffering caused by emotions are all derived from illusion – the false view. We think the burning candle is a “one thing”, because we ignore the air, temperature, lighter and wax that is being consumed. We think the lamp is a continuous light, but separate electrons keep it one after another. And the mind doesn’t have a host, but just consists of flowing mental formations.
It seems impossible to live without such a host – inherent self, but just like a movie, there’s no real creator to make it, and there’s no real actors on the screen…if so, who is watching the movie?
