When the cloud has passed by the top of the mountain with its changing body, when the snow has changed into ice, when the wind has swept away the trace of yesterday, when the moon raises up at a different time, when you take the water from miles away, when you get food and vegetables from the peasant nearby, when you light the fire with branches, log and droppings of goats, when the sunshine has melted the frost on window…you will feel you are getting closer to everyone and everything besides yourself, it becomes more clear that your living depends on everything else. Life is manifested in a more simple, direct and interactive way.
In the city, especially in the metropolitan areas, life seems more complicated, indirect and isolated. Because many links between other people or things and ourselves are covered or hidden by some specific forms, such as: supermarket, shopping mall, tap water, natural gas pipe, etc. There’s more distance or even gaps between us and these who provide living essentials Gradually, we may ignore these links and think, “I am depending only on myself”. We can call this a “delusion”. It doesn’t mean that modern life is not good, but don’t be blinded by its forms.
We can say there’s no such existence as existing without others’. The “I” must be “built” on the others, including nature. When the “self” truly becomes the “manifestation of others”, the feeling of real freedom will arise in our mind. That’s the primary stage of enlightenment. The wish that we hope everyone owns this kind of freedom – the medicine for curing suffering, is called compassion.
The clouds are still floating with their changing body, the snow freezes and melts, the wind will keep its characteristic of instability, and everyone is going on making a new life of everyday…but everything is full of enlightening and compassion : )
