Talk: Yi Women in Liangshan, Sichuan

The Yi are one of the largest minority groups of China, and spread out over Chinas entire Southwest. On the basis of photographs taken in the area, this talk introduces the Yi (Nuosu), a branch of the Yi that live in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, their culture and issues of contemporary social and cultural change from the vantage point of Yi (Nuosu) women and development in a rural context. Audio materials from Yi (Nuosu) folklore and traditional music are also included.

Olivia Skender-Kraef is currently a PhD candidate with the Institute of Sinology at the Free University of Berlin. Olivia studied sinology, political science, North-American studies and Chinese-English translation in Berlin, Bonn, and Beijing, and has lived, studied and worked in China for 12 years. Since 2002, Olivia has been conducting extensive research on the Yi (Nuosu) of Liangshan, Sichuan Province, particularly in the context of gender, migration, cultural change, minority policy and music.
