Huanglong
Province: Sichuan

Huanglong Overview

Huanglong, which means Yellow Dragon Mountain, is a valley studded with spectacular multicolored limestone ponds in every imaginable shade of blue and green. Situated in the northwest of Sichuan Province and 128 km south of Jiuzhaigou, the Huanglong Valley is edged by snow-capped peaks and glaciers. An incredible bio-diversity of flora and fauna thrives here alongside spectacular limestone formations, waterfalls and hot springs. The area also has a population of endangered animals, including the giant panda and the Sichuan golden snub-nosed Monkey.

What to see

The Limestone Landscapes are the main attraction of the Huanlong valley. 3,6 km long and 30-70m wide, the pale yellow calcareous deposits are an impressive and beautiful site.

The Huanglong Temple (Yellow Dragon Temple) lies at the foot of Xuebaoding, the major peak of Mt. Minshan. It consists of three smaller temples, which mark the head, the waist and the tail of a dragon respectively, going all the way down the valley.

The Huanglong Cave (Yellow Dragon Cave) is a huge cave, lying behind the last of the three temples, filled with stalactites. In winter one can even see icicles and ice waterfalls hanging inside.
